The Edmonton Oilers 1990 season was the Oilers’ 12th season in the NHL. And they were coming off of their 5th Stanley Cup in the last 7 seasons, after defeating the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup finals. The Oilers would finish the season with a 37–37–6 record for 80 points, their lowest point total since 1980–81, and Edmonton would score a franchise low 272 goals, however, the Oilers would set a franchise record for fewest goals against, with 272. After a 2–11–2 start to the season, the Oilers would rebound, and finish 3rd in the Smythe Division and continue their playoff streak of making the playoffs every year they’ve been in the NHL.

Prior to the season, long time Oiler Jari Kurri left the team due to a contract dispute signing with Italian club Milano Devils, leaving a big hole on the teams top line. Injuries would also hurt the Oilers, as Mark Messier would miss 29 games due to injuries, and his 64 points was his lowest total since 1984–85. Messier would also match the lowest goal total of his career with 12, which matched his rookie season total back in 1979–80.  More

The Edmonton Oilers 1984 season was the Oilers’ sixth season in the NHL, and they were coming off a Stanley Cup championship in 1983–84. Edmonton would win their fourth-straight Smythe Division title, and repeat as Stanley Cup champions. On June 5, 2017, this team was voted by fans as the greatest NHL team ever, as part of the NHL’s centennial celebrations.

The Oilers once again scored over 400 goals in a season. They also let in 298 goals, their fewest since the 1981–82 season. The Oilers would start the season with an NHL record 15-game unbeaten streak (12–0–3).

Wayne Gretzky would earn 208 points, breaking the 200 point mark for the third time in his career, and win his fifth straight Art Ross Trophy, and his sixth consecutive Hart Trophy. Jari Kurri would score a career-high 71 goals and 135 points, and win the Lady Byng Trophy. Paul Coffey had 121 points (37 goals-84 assists) en route to the first Norris Trophy of his career. On October 26, 1984, Coffey would be the last defenceman in the 20th Century to score four goals in one game. It occurred in a game versus the Detroit Red Wings. More

The Edmonton Oilers 1985 season was the Oilers’ seventh season in the NHL, and they were coming off back to back Stanley Cup Championships. Edmonton would win the inaugural Presidents’ Trophy, as they finished with 119 points, which was a league high and tied the franchise record which was set in the 1983–84 season. The Oilers won the Smythe Division for the 5th consecutive season, and were heavy favourites to win their third-straight Stanley Cup. It was also the fifth consecutive season in which they scored at least 400 goals. However, the Oilers were defeated by the Calgary Flames in the second round.

The 1985–86 NHL season was the 69th season of the National Hockey League. This season saw the league’s Board of Governors introduce the Presidents’ Trophy, which would go to the team with the best overall record in the NHL regular season. The Edmonton Oilers would be the first winners of this award.

The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Calgary Flames four games to one in the final series to win the Stanley Cup. More

The Edmonton Oilers 1987 season was the Oilers’ ninth season in the NHL. And they were coming off a Stanley Cup championship against the Philadelphia Flyers the previous season, which was their third Stanley Cup in the past 4 seasons. This was the first time since 1980–81 that the Oilers did not win the division, break the 100 point barrier, or lead the NHL in goals.

Wayne Gretzky would lead the team with 149 points (sitting out 16 games with a knee injury), his lowest point total since his rookie season in 1979–80, and the first time since then that he failed to lead the NHL in scoring. Jari Kurri and Craig Simpson, who the Oilers acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins during the season, would lead the team in goals with 43, and Mark Messier would set a career high with 111 points. With Paul Coffey being traded during the season to the Penguins, Steve Smith would step up and lead Oilers defense with 55 points, and have a team record 286 penalty minutes. More

The Edmonton Oilers 1988 season was the Oilers’ tenth season in the NHL, and they were coming off a Stanley Cup championship after defeating the Boston Bruins the previous season, which was their fourth Stanley Cup in the past 5 seasons. The Oilers would finish third in the Smythe Division with 84 points, their lowest point total since the 1980–81 season. For the eighth consecutive season, the Oilers had five 30-goal scorers.

Prior to the season, the Oilers would be involved in one of the biggest trades in NHL history, dealing Wayne Gretzky, Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, the Kings first round draft picks in 1989, 1991 and 1993, and $15 million.

Jari Kurri would lead the club with 102 points, while Jimmy Carson would score a team high 49 goals, and Mark Messier would have a team best 61 assists. Charlie Huddy would lead the defense with 44 points, while Kelly Buchberger would provide the team toughness, leading the Oilers with 234 penalty minutes.

In goal, Grant Fuhr would get the majority of the starts, leading the team with 23 wins, while Bill Ranford would have a team best 3.50 GAA. More
