The Edmonton Eskimos 1981 finished in 1st place in the West Division with a 14–1–1 record and won their fourth consecutive Grey Cup championship after winning the 69th Grey Cup.

The Eastern and Western Football Conferences, which had carried on as separate and autonomous entities since the founding of the CFL in 1958, agreed to a full merger prior to the start of the 1981 season.

With the merger, the Eastern and Western Football Conferences were dissolved and renamed as the East and West Divisions.

The merger authorizes the CFL to have full authority over decisions, including the adoption of a full interlocking schedule for both divisions. All nine teams played each other twice, once home and once away, regardless of their affiliated division. The Edmonton Eskimos 1982 finished in 1st place in the West Division with an 11–5–0 record and won their fifth consecutive Grey Cup championship after winning the 70th Grey Cup.

After the 1981 season, the Montreal Alouettes folded. However, one year later in 1982 the CFL granted the city of Montreal a new franchise called the Concordes, which assumed the Alouettes’ history and player contracts.

The 1982 Grey Cup game between the Edmonton Eskimos and the Toronto Argonauts attracted 7,862,000 television viewers, the largest television audience in the history of Canadian television.

NBC broadcast four CFL games in the United States over three weeks during the 1982 NFL players’ strike.

On February 23, the Sacramento Gold Miners were announced as the CFL’s ninth franchise, during the league’s annual meetings in Hamilton. The team began play in 1993 at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California. They joined the West Division. Sacramento became the first U.S.-based team to play in the CFL, and it was the first expansion team to be admitted into the league since 1954, when the B.C. Lions became a franchise. A potential expansion team to San Antonio, Texas (the San Antonio Riders, formerly of the then-suspended WLAF, to play as the San Antonio Texans) was put on hold for the 1993 season after the team folded instead.

On March 6, The Canadian College Draft held in Calgary at the Jubilee Auditorium, becoming the first Western Canadian city to host the event since Winnipeg in 1971. Calgary also played host to the Grey Cup game for only the second time in history on Sunday, November 28. In that game, the Edmonton Eskimos defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 33–23 before a crowd of 50,035.

The Edmonton Eskimos 2003 Canadian Football League season is considered to be the 50th season in modern-day Canadian football, although it is officially the 46th Canadian Football League season. The pre-season began on May 30, 2003 and the regular season started on June 17, 2003. Taylor Field in Regina, Saskatchewan hosted the 91st Grey Cup on November 16, with the Edmonton Eskimos defeating the Montreal Alouettes 34–22.

The Canadian Football League made a new five-year television deal with TSN and the CBC on February 27. Through the new agreement, TSN and CBC will be broadcasting 77 games, which is the most in CFL history. The CFL also introduced new specialty weekends that includes the Canada Day Bash, the Labour Day Classic and the Gridiron Thanksgiving. CFL.ca launched its new website in July.

The CFL also assumes control of the Toronto Argonauts on July 29 and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on August 15. The league appointed Paul Robson as the interim Operations Manager of the Argonauts and appointed Alan Ford to become interim Operations Manager of the Tiger-Cats. More

The Edmonton Eskimos 2005 Canadian Football League season is considere to be the 52nd season in modern-day Canadian football, although it is officially the 48th Canadian Football League season.

New ownership groups took control of two CFL franchises in the 2005 season. The Calgary Stampeders were sold to an ownership group that is led by Ted Hellard and former Stampeder legend, John Forzani. After going through ownership in-fighting, the Ottawa Renegades announced that a new ownership group led by Bill Smith and former Ottawa Rough Riders owner, Bernie Glieberman, would take over the team.

In April, the Toronto Argonauts plans to build a new stadium at York University had been cancel due to rising costs. However, the owners of the Rogers Centre announced that the Argonauts would be able to remain at the stadium rent-free. Previously, the Argonauts were charged the highest in terms of rent than any other team in the CFL.  More
