The Cleveland Indians 2016 season was the 116th season for the franchise and the 23rd season at Progressive Field. The Indians won the American League Central Division for the first time since 2007 and also beat the Boston Red Sox in the Division Series for their first playoff win in nine years. They defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in five games in the American League Championship Series before losing to the Chicago Cubs in seven games in the 2016 World Series. The Indians would face the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series, again having home-field advantage. The Indians would win a pair of pitchers’ duels in Games 1 and 2, 2-0 and 2-1. In Game 1, the Indians scored their only runs on a Francisco Lindor home run in the sixth inning.

Starter Adam Wainwright accumulated a franchise-record ​34 2⁄3 innings (IP) before issuing his first walk on April 23 and earned NL Pitcher of the Month honors in June.

The Oakland Athletics 1988 season involved the A’s winning their first American League West title since 1981, with a record of 104 wins and 58 losses. In 1988, the elephant was restored as the symbol of the Athletics and currently adorns the left sleeve of home and road uniforms. In a season that started late by 18 games – giving it just 144 games – the Indians finished in first place in the American League Central Division with a record of 100 wins and 44 losses. The most outstanding pitcher for the Indians was their relief pitcher, José Mesa, who finished second in the voting for the American League’s Cy Young Award.
